Pentagon report breaks China-US trust

The latest Pentagon report has simply shown that the United States that is disturbing the construction of new model of major power relations between the US and China.

Similar to previous reports since 2000, the US Defense Department's annual report to Congress was filled with old tones and "Cold War" mentality, overlooking China's peaceful defense policy and spewing cliches about "China's military threat."

Based on flawed information, the report claimed China's defense budget for 2013 was nearing 145 billion US dollars, 20 percent higher than the officially announced 119.5 billion US dollars.

The US, as the largest military power, criticizing a developing country whose total military spending is only one fifth of the US, means no one can say the US is truly interested in mutual trust and cooperation.

Despite China's efforts to clarify its strategic intentions of peaceful development, the report also cast doubt, once again, on the transparency of its military, exaggerating tensions between China and neighboring countries over maritime disputes.

Even more ridiculously, the annual report renewed warnings about China's "offensive cyber capabilities". Hasn't the US been exposed as the global surveillance cyber-bully?

Military mutual trust is important in major power relations. The biased stance on China's legitimate military modernization drive shows the US is still stuck in a policy of both engaging and containing China, rather than being fully devoted to mutual trust.

China has repeatedly stated the defensive nature of its national defense policy.

The ill-intended accusations will not stop China modernizing and improving its military to protect its national interests.

Just as the report admitted, "A new model of military-to-military relations seeks to manage competition through sustained and substantive dialogue and a commitment to risk reduction..."

Perhaps the US will turn words into concrete actions and drop its old hegemony supported by advanced weapons.

As the report noted, increasing high-level visits and joint exercises have been showing a positive momentum of military exchanges between the two countries.

If the Pentagon truly cherished the fragile mutual trust, it would cancel these reports. Such annual belly-aching report is vainglorious noise that should be cast in the trash-can of history.
