Hong Kong to mark 28th anniversary of return to motherland with series of activities

(ECNS) -- Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will hold a series of activities across all 18 districts to mark the 28th anniversary of its return to the motherland, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu told a press conference Tuesday.

Activities include flag-raising ceremonies, marching performances, carnivals, and sports tournaments, Lee said. The city will introduce preferential measures covering public transport, cultural entertainment, dining, and shopping for citizens.

According to Lee, on July 1, 2025, the day marking the 28th anniversary, MTR Corporation Limited (MTR) will distribute 71,000 free single-journey e-tickets via lottery, with winning tickets valid for one free ride on designated routes within six months. Children aged 3 to 11 may ride the Airport Express free of charge, while passengers aged 60 or above enjoy half-price fares. Citizens can take free Star Ferry rides between Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai. Additionally, Hong Kong Tramways will offer free rides from July 1 to 3. 

In terms of cultural and recreational activities, multiple leisure facilities under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the HKSAR Government, as well as relevant exhibitions at the Hong Kong Science Museum, Hong Kong Space Museum, M+ Museum, and Hong Kong Palace Museum, will be open to the public for free. Ngong Ping 360, the Peak Tram, and Hong Kong Ocean Park will also offer special promotions.

For dining and shopping promotions, over 1,000 restaurants and retailers will offer special menu items and discounts on that day.

Lee expressed gratitude to various sectors for their active response in providing special offers and diverse celebratory activities for citizens.
