China says it requires overseas firms to follow host country laws amid Mekong pollution claims

(ECNS) – The Chinese Embassy in Thailand said China consistently requires its overseas enterprises to strictly follow the laws and regulations of host countries, responding to recent media reports alleging Chinese mining operations in Myanmar may have caused heavy metal pollution in tributaries of the Mekong River in northern Thailand.

Media reports cited elevated levels of heavy metals in the Kok and Sai rivers, raising environmental concerns and speculation about the impacts linked to Chinese firms operating across the border.

In a statement issued Sunday, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy said that China takes the issue seriously and has taken note of test results released by Thai authorities. The embassy supports Thailand and Myanmar in strengthening communication and coordination and encourages a scientific, objective and responsible investigation into the matter.

It emphasized that China is committed to lawful, compliant overseas operations and reiterated its willingness to cooperate with all Mekong River basin nations in jointly safeguarding the region’s ecological environment and water quality.
