(ECNS)-- The 20th China International Optoelectronic Expo (CIOE), held recently in Wuhan, Hubei Province, showcased nearly 100 cutting-edge technologies and innovations, bolstering the city's East Lake High-Tech Development Zone — known as China's Optics Valley — in its quest to build a world-class optoelectronics industrial cluster.

For the first time, the expo was included in UNESCO's International Day of Light events, marking China Optics Valley's growing integration into the global innovation network.

Themed “Light Connects All, Intelligence Guides the Future,” the event featured expanded zones including “Light + Smart Terminal Applications”and a dedicated exhibition on industrial achievements in optoelectronics.

At the opening ceremony, global experts discussed photonics and optical communications, as well as VCSEL laser chips for AI and smart applications.

Wuhan University Professor Li Deren, recipient of China's National Highest Science and Technology Award, emphasized the need for intelligent optoelectronic devices to achieve spatiotemporal intelligence across domains like aerospace, land, sea, and space, addressing sustainability challenges to drive industrial growth.

Wuhan's East Lake High-Tech Development Zone signed a strategic memorandum with the Steering Committee of UNESCO's International Day of Light to deepen collaboration in public science outreach.

The CIOE is a pivotal platform for optoelectronic innovation in China, said Joseph Niemela, chair of the UNESCO International Day of Light Steering Committee. Its scale reflects China Optics Valley's central role in research, manufacturing, and market applications across central and western China, he added.

Over 1,000 innovations were unveiled at the event, including nearly 100 “first-of-their-kind” technologies.

Peter Andrekson, member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, praised the event as a "complete industry chain showcase," highlighting seamless integration from raw materials to end-user applications.

At the opening ceremony, 20 major investment projects totaling 19.52 billion yuan ($2.7 billion) were signed, spanning optical communications, integrated circuits, compound semiconductors, advanced displays, and AI. Ten significant technology trade agreements were finalized, alongside the debut participation of 13 overseas procurement delegations.

An East Lake High-Tech Development Zone official stated that its goal is to rank among China’s top five high-tech hubs by 2030 and establish itself as a globally influential “World Optics Valley” by 2035.
