'Ne Zha 2' becomes global single-market box office champion of all time
(ECNS) -- Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 became the highest-grossing film in a single market worldwide on Friday, with box office revenue surpassing 6.79 billion yuan ($931.6 million), according to data from tracker Beacon.
As of 9 p.m. on Feb. 7, the film had exceeded the North American box office earnings of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, a sci-fi movie released in 2015.
Earlier, on Thursday, it overtook the 2021 war epic The Battle at Lake Changjin, claiming the top spot in China’s box office history.
Premiering in Chinese cinemas on Jan. 29, Ne Zha 2 has captivated audiences and sustained remarkable box office momentum since its release.
As a sequel to the 2019 hit, the film continues the story of the iconic Ne Zha, a mythological character in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) novel Fengshen Yanyi, or The Investiture of the Gods.
With the help of the immortal Taiyi Zhenren, Ne Zha and Ao Bing reconstruct their bodies and embark on a new journey.
Through breathtaking animation, the film takes audiences on an emotional journey that seamlessly weaves action, humor, and heartfelt moments.
According to CMC Pictures, Ne Zha 2 is scheduled for official release in the United States and Canada on Feb. 14, with pre-sale tickets already in high demand.
