The Alibaba Group announced Wednesday it will set up a new research institute, the DAMO Academy, and invest over 100 billion yuan over the next three years in advanced technology development.
10月11日，阿里巴巴集團宣布成立一個新的研究院“達摩院”，并計劃在未來三年投資1000億元進行高端技術研究。
The project includes opening seven new research labs in China, the United States, Russia, Israel and Singapore, recruiting related talents on top of its 25,000 engineers and scientists.
“達摩院”將在中國、美國、俄羅斯、以色列和新加坡開設七個新研究實驗室，并在現有的25000名工程師和科學家的基礎上招募相關領域的專業人才。
“達摩院”的英文名為the DAMO Academy,DAMO是Discovery（發現）、Adventure（探索）、Momentum（動力）和Outlook（愿景）四個詞的詞首字母縮寫。
“達摩院”首批公布的研究領域包括：量子計算（quantum computing）、機器學習（machine learning）、基礎算法（basic algorithms）、網絡安全（network security）、視覺計算（visual computing）、自然語言處理（natural language processing）、人機自然交互（human-machine interaction）、芯片技術（chip technology）、傳感器技術（sensor technology）、嵌入式系統（embedded system）等，涵蓋機器智能、智聯網、金融科技等多個產業領域。
“達摩院”實行院長負責制，由阿里巴巴集團 CTO 張建鋒（花名行癲）擔任首任院長，同時設置由全球科技領域頂尖人物組成的學術咨詢委員會（global advisory board）。“達摩院”與阿里現有研發體系保持相對獨立，建立新的機制以專注于中長期的技術研發。“達摩院”由三大主體組成，一是在全球建設的自主研究中心（independent research centers），二是與高校和研究機構建立的聯合實驗室（joint research labs），三是全球開放研究項目-阿里巴巴創新研究計劃（Alibaba Innovative Research，AIR計劃）。
張建鋒表示，在金庸小說中，達摩院代表最高武學機構（the highest-ranking institution of martial arts）。我們也希望阿里巴巴達摩院真正做到“俠之大者、利國利民”（a real swordsman strives to serve the country and its people）。我們期望，下一個類似電和計算機的顛覆性技術創新，誕生在阿里巴巴達摩院。
阿里巴巴董事局主席馬云對“達摩院”提出了三點期許：
1.“達摩院”要活得比阿里巴巴長（the academy must outlive Alibaba），有一天即使阿里巴巴不在了，達摩院還要繼續存在。
2. “達摩院”要利用研發成果使阿里巴巴成為世界第五大經濟體（build the group into the size of the world's fifth-largest economy），為世界解決一億就業機會（create 100 million job opportunities around the world），服務跨國界的二十億人（provide services to 2 billion people），為一千萬家企業創造盈利的平臺（offer profit-making platforms for 10 million enterprises）。
3. “達摩院”要考慮解決未來的問題（being future-oriented to solve the problems of the future）。
