Boasting a history of more than 1,500 years, the Longmen Grottoes in central China's Henan Province represent the high point of Chinese stone carving. Its construction began in the late 5th century during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Along a one-kilometer stretch, the grottoes have more than 2,300 caves and niches, with almost 110,000 Buddhist stone statues and more than 2,800 inscriptions, constituting a magnificent Buddhist cave complex. The Longmen Grottoes were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.
