Friday marks the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. The Winter Solstice occurs annually between December 20 to 23 when the sun reaches its most southerly declination. The importance of the event also varies from culture to culture.

Most Northern Hemisphere cultures hold a recognition of rebirth. In China, it is a custom for people in the north to eat dumplings on the day. In some areas people will also make a special kind of soup that keeps the body warm. While in southern China, people usually visit the graves of their relatives who passed away, and eat wonton soup or sweet dumplings.
