Unique jewelry on show in Beijing

A contemporary jewelry exhibition recently went up in Beijing. Organized by the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the exhibition drew over twenty world-class jewelers from countries like Germany, France and Britain.

This isn't your grandfather's jewelry show. Contemporary designs eschew old standards of cut, karat and class, instead focusing on material and form - and their relationship to the people who wear them.

This German designer demonstrated his works to visitors.

There is a striking lack of precious metals at this show. Paper pulp, wood and plastic are the most common materials here, but unique designs and superb craftsmanship can drive prices indeed quite high.

These colorful rings not only look sweet, but also taste sweet, because they are made of sugar. This one incorporates human hair into resin. And these fish-like works are meant to express concern over pollution.

Teng Fei, professor of Central Academy of Fine Arts, said, "This jewelry can be for wearing, handling or for collecting. What's more, as works of art, they're meant to express caring and inspire people."

The exhibition also pays tribute to the tenth anniversary of the jewelry design major at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. The event runs to early December.
