(ECNS) -- Hong Kong Customs announced on Tuesday that it has seized approximately 64 kilogram of suspected gold bullion, worth an estimated 46 million Hong Kong dollars (about $5.92 million), the largest smuggled gold bullion on record for local customs in terms of both weight and value.
Customs officers inspected an air cargo shipment destined for Japan on last Wednesday, which was declared to contain toys, lamps, and hats. Yet, they discovered the suspected gold bullion concealed in four cardboard boxes.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities do not rule out further arrests.
Hong Kong Customs emphasized its commitment to cracking down on smuggling through risk assessment and intelligence analysis. Officers also reminded the public that smuggling is a serious offense as stipulated in the Import and Export Ordinance, with a maximum fine of 2 million Hong Kong dollars and seven years in prison upon conviction.
