(ECNS) -- Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has received 200,000 applications from catering merchants after it announced it would venture into the country's food delivery business a week ago.
JD.com food delivery's pricing structure, including a minimum order threshold, delivery charges and times, is comparable to those of established rivals Meituan and Ele.me.
However, it distinguishes itself by exclusively partnering with chain restaurant brands to meet consumer demand for safe and high-quality food.
It offers two options, merchant self-delivery and Dada delivery service (a third-party delivery platform), with the latter being the primary mode.
The e-commerce giant promises all-round support for merchants, helping them maximize benefits while promoting the healthy and sustainable growth of the food delivery industry. To attract businesses, it is waiving commission fees for merchants joining before May 1, 2025. In contrast, Meituan charges a commission rate of six to eight percent.
According to the 2024 China Catering Industry Annual Report, China's food delivery market reached approximately 1.2 trillion yuan (about $164.75 billion) in 2023, accounting for 22.6 percent of total catering industry revenue. Online marketing models, including food delivery, have become a critical revenue stream for catering businesses.
Meituan boasts over 7.45 million delivery riders and the number for Ele.me is nearly four million. Whether JD.com can carve out a significant market share among fierce rivalry remains unknown.
