(ECNS) -- China is making greater efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, Wang Wenbin, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday, in response to the International Energy Agency (IEA) urging China to reach carbon neutrality 10 years earlier than the previous goal.
Wealthy countries must now reach carbon neutrality by 2045, five years earlier, while China is supposed to achieve the target by 2050, 10 years earlier, according to the IEA’s reassessment.
China has announced its targets for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality since September 2020, and on the basis of national conditions will make a greater stride in climate actions, such as raising Nationally Determined Contributions, optimizing domestic coal consumption, upgrading coal-fired power plants and not undertaking new overseas coal-fired power projects.
“China is a doer in ecological conservation and climate governance,” Wang said, adding that “will go through broad-ranging and deep-going economic and social reforms which require painstaking efforts.”
He noted that the country's determined and results-oriented climate response is widely recognized by the international community. Moreover, China will steadily scale up its climate actions, assuming international responsibilities commensurate with national conditions, he added.
