(ECNS) -- Affected by the drought in southwest China’s Yunnan in 2023, thermal power generation has increased substantially and as of May 5, 1.5 million tons of coal have been transported to the province for thermal power purposes, an increase of 600,000 tons year on year, or 66 percent in growth.
According to data published by the Department of Emergency Management of Yunnan Province, this year, its average rainfall is 60 percent less than the same period of previous years, and the average temperature is 0.8 degree Celsius higher than normal.
The drought has affected a wide range of areas, leading to limited hydropower output and a substantial increase in thermal power.
In addition, with the beginning of summer, the peak of electricity consumption will soon arrive.
“We have arranged staff members to interface with clients to make clear the delivery and arrival quantity of coal. And our station has deployed enough labor and 20 vehicles to work 24 hours a day for coal distribution,” said Jiang Fei, a staff member at the Weishe Station of Kunming Train Operation Depot, China Railway Kunming Group.
At present, the coal storage of power plants directly supplied by Yunnan Railway can be used for at least 30 days on average.
