(ECNS) -- A wild population of big lilies including about 50 to 60 individuals was found in Taiping National Forest Park of Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi Province for the first time.
The big lily, whose scientific name is cardiocrinumcathayanum, is a national second-level key protected plant in China.
A research team led by Professor Li Zhonghu from Northwest University conducted an on-site survey on July 4, 2022, and confirmed that the plant is cardiocrinum cathayanum, a member of the lily family.
According to Li Zhonghu, each inflorescence of the plant contains one to five flowers, each flower has a bract, and its filament is relatively long, while the relative species Yunan big lily in adjacent areas contains 10 to 17 flowers per inflorescence and the florets have no bracts.
The flowering periods of both species are obviously different.
It has been included in the list of national key protected wild plants, necessitating a protection area.
