(ECNS) -- By the end of 2021, the number of effective invention patents in the core sectors of China's digital economy reached 977,000, accounting for 35.2 percent of the country's total effective patents, said the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) on Tuesday.
The Yangtze River Delta area, the Greater Bay Area, and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area are three strong pillars in terms of regional distribution. Their valid invention patents accounted for 72.4 percent of the total.
Chongqing and Sichuan in southwest China have shown great potential and seen the fastest growth, with an average of 27.9 percent in the past five years.
From the perspective of innovation, Chinese enterprises have become the main force driving such development. Their valid invention patents in the core industries of the digital economy accounted for 73.1 percent of the total.
The Chinese digital economy and other emerging technologies have been flourishing in recent years, with an increased number of intellectual property patents, said Ge Shu, director-general of the Strategic Planning Department of the CNIPA.
China is gaining momentum in the development of key and core technologies of the digital economy, said Ge.
For example, in the field of Artificial Intelligence, 57,000 Chinese invention patents were authorized by the world’s major intellectual property bureaus in 2021, up 5.1 times from 2016, with an average annual growth of 38.5 percent, Ge said.
According to data released by The German Patent and Trade Mark Office, patent applications from China in digital communication and other digital economic fields increased greatly in Germany in 2021 compared to 2020.
CNIPA will further conduct Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) protection and practice exploration of big data, AI and other new formats, promote the implementation of data IPR protection projects, and strengthen the driving force for the innovation and development of the digital economy, said Ge.
