(ECNS) —- China's registered unemployment rate in urban areas stood at 3.9 percent at the end of 2017, the lowest level since 2002, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MHRSS) said on Monday.
A total of 13.51 million new jobs were created in urban areas in 2017 with the unemployment rate below 4 percent for four consecutive quarters, You Jun, vice minister of the MHRSS, made the remarks at a press conference.
About 5.58 million unemployed workers were re-employed and 1.77 million people facing difficulties finding a job also found work, said the official.
China’s working-age population totalled more than 900 million in 2017 and is expected to remain over 800 million before 2035, Zhang Yizhen, a vice minister of the MHRSS, said during the same press event.
Zhang also said the government carried out measures to improve job skills, allocating funds for occupational training to more than 17 million people in 2017, including 8 million farmers.
