    AI robot completes national math exam in 10 minutes

    (ECNS) - AI-MATHS, an artificial intelligence system developed by Chengdu Zhunxing Yunxue Technology Co, completed a math paper of the national college entrance exam, or gaokao, in 10 minutes and scored 100 points out of 150, media reported.

    It was not the first time the AI-MATHS robot sat the math examination. In February, it scored 93 points out of 150 in a similar test, lower than the student average of 106.

    AI-MATHS solves problems by employing a logical reasoning platform, according to Lin Hui, the robot's founder.

    As with many robots, its understanding of the Chinese language was where it fell short. It did not perform well in some mathematical word tests because it "cannot understand the meaning of the questions," according to experts. For example, it can't understand words like "investment" and "wealth management."

    Zhunxing Yunxue Technology has been researching and developing AI-MATHS since 2013.

    An earlier AI product developed by the company was an intelligence evaluating system, which could record students' question-answering process, said Lin, who also works with the big data center of the Suzhou research institution under Tsinghua University.

    The intelligence evaluating system not only helped students pinpoint their shortcomings, but also saved teachers' time evaluating papers, Lin said.

    A pilot program is seeing the AI-MATHS robot used for math education in middle schools in Suzhou and Chengdu, among other cities. In addition to education, the use of the robot could be expanded to other industries, including finance, medical treatment and transport, Lin said.
