(ECNS) -- The "Smog Free Tower" being tested in Beijing's 798 art district is just a piece of art that helps to ease air pollution, said the head of the project, Beijing Youth Daily reported.
The tower, designed by Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, is built with components imported from the Netherlands. It is capable of capturing and collecting at least 75 percent of PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles and purifying 30,000 cubic meters of air per hour, creating a fresh-air area around the tower, said the project head.
The inspiration for the tower came from a smog reduction campaign initiated by Dutch designers. In the Netherlands, such a tower can purify the air in an area the size of a soccer field.
Beijing has to wait for test results to be released at the end of this month to see the tower's actual performance, it was added.
The project head admitted that it is mainly aimed at promoting environmental protection awareness among the general public.
