(ECNS) - Beijing's under-construction subsidiary administrative center in Tongzhou district will have no walls erected around its government buildings, the Beijing News reported.
The capital city is undergoing massive construction in the eastern district to shift municipal administrative bodies there, amid efforts to address congestion and pollution. An area about six kilometers long in the district's Lucheng Town will be the new location of core administrative offices.
Zhang Yaqin, director of the administrative offices construction project, said the new buildings would highlight openness and exchange functions as much as possible, and there would be no walls to separate them from each other.
Zhang made the statement during the second U.S.-China Climate-Smart/Low-Carbon Cities Summit in Beijing.
He said the buildings would fit the natural environment and be people-oriented. The blocks would be about 150-200 meters wide and residents would be able to access all kinds of public services within a 10-15 minute walking distance.
Innovation is at the heart of the overall planning, design and construction, while new technology, materials and techniques are being widely applied, he added.
He also said all offices would have fiber optic broadband services and be the first to use next generation 5G network.
Management of the buildings will also make full use of Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing and virtual reality technology in order to build a smart city.
An emergency command system, an integrated rescue and assistance platform, and an online public opinion monitoring system would also be established in the zone to improve city management abilities.
A recent central government guideline on urban planning has supported opening up gated residential communities to a public road system.
