(ECNS) -- Teacher ethics have become an increasingly important caliber of performance as primary and middle schools, especially renowned ones, still suffer from teachers compromising their morality.
A survey of 3,000 parent groups conducted by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences shows that 7.4 percent are not positive regarding teacher morality, with major problems pertaining to gift receiving and paid tutorials.
Wu Zunmin, a researcher at Institute of Basic Education Reform and Development, said receiving gifts and cash from parents jeopardizes the equality of education and teacher reputations. He said a sound evaluation and supervision system is in urgent need.
In the past five years, the government has issued several rules and regulations to reduce such events. Another survey shows that 95 percent of schools regard teacher ethics as important when they consider candidates.
In Chengdu, Sichuan province, teachers are appraised on a five-year basis, with morality an important factor. A teacher who doesn't meet moral qualifications will be removed from the post.
Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, issued regulations to deal with teachers who broke the rules. In this year alone, the city has dealt with more than 20 such cases.
Jin Zhongming, a professor at the education college of East China Normal University, said besides supervision, schools and education departments should raise teacher benefits, promote respect and build a good environment to encourage sound morality.
