(ECNS) -- Some Taiwanese are calling for the system of traditional Chinese characters to become a world cultural heritage, according to Taiwan's udn.com.
Traditional characters, or complex-formed characters, are referred to in contrast to the simplified Chinese used on the Chinese mainland. Taiwan and Hong Kong still use the traditional characters, though governments and primary schools in Hong Kong are abandoning the tradition.
Some Taiwanese people are proposing a cultural heritage application, while others think some traditional characters are too complex for daily use.
This is not the first such initiative in Taiwan to promote traditional characters. Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou made an attempt soon after he took the post. However, the bid failed as Taiwan has no right to file an application as part of China.
