(ECNS) -- A barbed wire fence has been erected down the middle of a road in Shenzhen in a radical measure to stop pedestrians illegally crossing the road, reported Daily Sunshine on Wednesday.
Bearing thorns all over its spiraling body, the silver-colored fence effectively prevents pedestrians from jaywalking in Futian district of Shenzhen city, Guangdong province. Located on the median strip in the middle of the street, the fence divides the road into two opposing lanes of traffic.
However, with no overbridge within a few hundred meters along the road, pedestrians are concerned about the inconvenience posed by the barbed wire fence. People have to walk another few hundred meters simply to cross the road. In addition, the twisting and thorn-covered fence is unattractive.
However, a security officer in Shenzhen said the fence's primary purpose is to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
Meanwhile, a government official promised to reconsider the type of fence to determine if something other than the harsh-looking barbed wire could be adequate.
