(ECNS) - A gale reached level 12 on the Beaufort scale when a passenger ship carrying 458 people overturned on Monday night in the Hubei section of China's Yangtze River, according to the local meteorological department in Hubei. [Special coverage]
The strong wind turned over the ship instantly, the Henan Business Daily reported.
The ship was heading from Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, to southwest China's Chongqing city.
Rescue work is still underway.
