HK schools urged to include Chinese history course

(ECNS) -- Making Chinese history a required course at Hong Kong schools is "necessary" despite the possible difficulties faced in doing so, Henry Tang Ying-yen, the former chief secretary for administration, said in Beijing on Monday.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has "made a mistake" in canceling Chinese history as a required subject by which young people could learn more about Chinese culture, Tang commented.

Tang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remark during a group discussion on Monday afternoon. [Special coverage]

"Without a comprehensive understanding of history, how can our people love their country?" he asked.

Tang added that the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong should both enhance their support of the "one country, two systems" idea.
