(ECNS) - The energy revolution in China faces a dilemma -- to produce enough energy that is also clean and cheap, the 21st Century Business Herald reported Wednesday, citing a leading researcher.

A group led by Zheng Xinye, head of the energy center at the National Academy of Development and Strategy, under Renmin University of China (RUC), has been seeking to find solutions to China's energy problems.

China's goals for energy reform include ensuring adequate energy supply, curbing environmental pollution, readjusting economic structure, handling price impacts and guaranteeing energy security.

During a seminar on China's energy revolution at RUC, Zheng referred to the goals as a paradoxical "Penrose triangle," and said the priority is to utilize coal in a clean way.

The solutions put forward by Zheng's research group for this objective are clean energy use, rational pricing and scientific government regulations.

China's share of world energy consumption has been rising since 1980. In 2010, China surpassed the US with 21.7 percent of the world's energy consumption.

Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics indicate that in 2014, China's total energy consumed was 3.84 billion tons of standard coal, with a growth rate of 1.4 percentage points lower than the year before.

It is expected that China will consume 4 billion tons of standard coal in 2015.

Zheng said he believes a turning point in China's energy consumption will come in 2018.
