(ECNS) - Hong Kong plans to build a shopping center near the Lok Ma Chau Control Point to divert shoppers from the mainland, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported on Wednesday.

Mainland visitors rushing to buy goods for the Spring Festival, China's Lunar New Year, have been crowding Hong Kong's North District.

The Hong Kong government plans to build a shopping center on its border to meet mainland shoppers' demands for daily necessities such as milk powder, said the city's chief executive Leung Chun-ying on Tuesday.

A Hong Kong government source says that a 10,000-square-meter area of land near the Lok Ma Chau Control Point will be available in May, and that about 100 commercial tenants will be sought to open outlets there.

The land owner has agreed to lease the land to be used as a shopping center for five years, according to the newspaper.

Once facilities such as transportation are all set, the shopping center is expected to open for business after the summer vacation.

Data released by the Hong Kong Tourism Board show that the number of mainland tourists to Hong Kong rose by 16 percent to 47.25 million, over 77 percent of total travelers.
