TOEFL answers leaked and sold for $4,800

(ECNS) - Test questions for the TOEFL on Jan 31 were leaked and the answers were sold ahead of the test, the Beijing News reported on Monday.

The answers were sent to test-takers via the microblogging site Weibo or the messaging app WeChat.

Fu Yingdong, a TOEFL writing teacher from www.eng24.com, an online English training center, said the night before the exam he received messages containing the subjects from the speaking and writing sections, as well as a notification that the answers were also available.

After that day's test, a comparison between the leaked subjects and the online exam paper showed that they were indeed the same.

Answers for the reading section were also leaked.

Wu Xiaoliang, a TOEFL teacher, said some people received messages on Weibo that the subjects and answers to the Jan 31 TOEFL were available and being sold for between 10,000 to 30,000 yuan ($1,597-4,800).

Chinese staff at the USA's Educational Testing Service (ETS) said they had not been informed of the leak, and advised that the issue be reported to ibcsr@mail.neea.edu.cn, as test organizers in China have no right to handle such matters.

If investigated and verified by the ETS, the incident could result in the canceling of examinees' scores.
