(ECNS) - China's sports authority is ending its long-standing practice of ranking provinces according to how many gold medals, trophies or total points they receive at the national games.
The move is part of the ongoing anti-graft campaign, and an inspection team was sent by the central government to advise the General Administration of Sport from July 28 to September 3.
The inspectors said that some cadres rely on athletic performance and gold medals to gain political success.
Such politicians push athletes and coaches to get more gold medals and neglect the management, guidance and education of athletes.
As a result, some athletes and coaches violate codes of sportsmanship or even break the law to secure better performances during games.
Athletes should strive to pursue excellence and promote the Olympic spirit, rather than focus on getting as many gold medals as possible, say inspectors.
In response, the General Administration of Sport will stop handing out awards based on performances during the Asian Games or Olympic Games.
It has also abolished its tradition of ranking provinces based on athletic performances in the national games.
In addition, the evaluation of provincial sports development will account for public participation and input-output efficiency in the sporting industry.
