(ECNS) -- Shi Liliang, a monk from Quanzhou Southern Shaolin Monastery, walked 120 meters on water in Changsha city, Central China's Hunan province, breaking his own world record of 118 meters, rednet.cn reported on Monday.

Nearly 200 sheets of plywood were laid on the surface of Meixi Lake for Shi to walk upon.

He lost his balance at 56 meters and fell into the water on his first try, but succeeded in walking 120 meters during his second attempt.

Walking on water challenges the sense of balance; the more you try, the lower your chance of success, Shi said after his achievement.

Many physical education students and parkour fans tried to break Shi's record but the furthest they could manage was just 32 meters.

Walking on water is about speed, the coordination of your breathing, rhythm, balance and stamina, Shi explained.

He vowed to try for 150 meters next time.
