(ECNS) - Electronic equipment and armed forces are being deployed along the central route of the South-North Water Transfer Project in China to combat potential terrorist attacks or other destruction, cnr.cn reported on Wednesday.

Water has been flowing for a month on the central route of the massive transfer project, which extends for over 1,400 kilometers, making it an easy target for terrorist attacks.

Electronic surveillance devices are being installed along the route, and armed forces have been deployed in some important areas, according to E Jingping, head of the Office of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

If any sabotage does occur, an automatic system will close stop-gates within a few minutes and mitigate serious damage, he said.

Emergency drills have also been carried out to ensure readiness for emergencies, he added.
