Beijing subway to deploy 3,600 staff to apprehend fare dodgers

(ECNS) -- For those who attempt to dodge fares on Beijing's subway lines, it's time to think again.

The capital will raise its subway fare from two yuan (US$0.32) to three yuan (US$0.48) on December 28. Tips to dodge or minimize these fares have since gone viral on the Chinese Internet.

Beijing Traffic Management Bureau has said that 3,600 people will be deployed to help passengers become familiar with the fare hike. They will also help deal with emergencies and increase supervision over attempted fare dodgers.

The bureau said the subway's hardware and software systems would be upgraded ahead of the fare change. Subway procedures will be ready for the new fare system before new pricing takes effect, Beijing Morning Post reported.

Plans to build a subway system in Beijing began in 1953. Construction of Subway Line 1 began in 1965 and was completed in 1969. It was the first underground metro in China.

The total length of Beijing's subway network will hit 527km once 62km of line extensions, including the latest additions to Line 6, are opened by the end of 2014.
