(ECNS) -- China's capital is researching the construction of six wind corridors across the city to tackle air pollution, Beijing News reported.

An insider from the Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning and Design said these corridors are considered according to downtown ventilation potential alongside analysis results pertaining to the city's heat island effect.

This effect has been worsening regional air pollution and is the main reason wind corridors are being considered.

The person noted that the six corridors are part of an initial proposal to Beijing's new urban planning scheme, which is currently being revised.

In July, the city had already discussed the construction of such wind corridors. A research leader at the Beijing Municipal Research Institute of Environment Protection said a feasibility study of the project is underway.

Several cities, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Wuhan are working to build ventilated corridors that would allow wind to disperse polluted air.
