China Embassy in Canada confirms Harper’s attendance at APEC

Toronto (ECNS) -- The Chinese Embassy in Canada has confirmed that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper would visit China and attend Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings, chinanews.com reported on Wednesday.

Luo Zhaohui, Chinese Ambassador to Canada, made the remarks at a reception for the Speaker of the Canadian Senate Noel Kinsella.

Luo lauded Kinsella's contributions to improving cooperation between the two countries' legislative bodies in the past eight years.

Luo said Harper's China trip and attendance at APEC meetings would push bilateral ties to a new level.

Harper's office said earlier this week that he had canceled plans to attend the forum in the wake of attacks last week in Ottawa that killed two soldiers.

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday that China and Canada were discussing Harper's attendance at APEC, according to Xinhua.

The APEC meetings will be held in Beijing from Nov 5 to 11.
