(ECNS) – A list released on Tuesday by the ministry of environmental protection showed that the capital was among the 10 Chinese cities with the worst air quality in the third quarter, suffering from air pollution an average of 45 percent of days during the three-month period.

Beijing was on the list in September, August, July, April, and February this year, the Beijing News reported.

Another round of heavy smog is predicted to invade Beijing between Thursday and Saturday.

The Municipal Environment Protection Monitoring Center warned that as atmospheric diffusion weakens, the capital's air will be heavily polluted in the next three days. The smog won't be dispersed until Sunday when cold air blows through north China.

Beijing has been shrouded by smog twice already in October. Sun Feng, a senior engineer at the monitoring center, explained that it's due to seasonal climate features. An inversion layer forms as the temperature rises after cold air passes through, which blocks air pollutants from dispersing, Sun said.

Less precipitation and straw-burning in some regions also make the air worse, he added.

Beijing's air quality has been bad in the last few months.
