(ECNS) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed hopes that Chinese tourists would behave in a civilized way while traveling abroad during his state visit to Maldives, chinanews.com reported.

During a meeting on Monday with Chinese entrepreneurs, local Chinese representatives, and staff of the Chinese Embassy in Maldives, Xi said "our citizens should be educated to behave in a civilized way."

"Don't throw mineral water bottles around and don't damage the coral reef here," he said. "Eat less instant noodles, and more seafood," he added, arousing laughter and applause.

Xi also demanded Chinese nationals living in Maldives to present a positive image of China, and asked Chinese enterprises to build their brands there with "practical actions."

Chinese outbound trips have reached 100 million annually. With living standards gradually elevated, Chinese tourists are setting their feet in more places around the globe, from Hong Kong and Taiwan to the UK and France, from the US and Canada to Maldives, he said.

Xi said more than 400,000 Chinese tourists are expected to travel to Maldives this year, and hoped tourism promotion and services could meet the demand.

The president told his Maldivian counterpart earlier that day that China would encourage more people to tour there, and hoped the country could protect the safety and interests of Chinese tourists.
