No Chinese doctors in Guinea infected with Ebola

(ECNS) -- Mainstream newspapers in Beijing on Tuesday denied the rumor that Chinese doctors from Beijing hospitals had been infected with Ebola and died in Guinea, one of the African countries hit by the deadly virus.

The rumor said that nine Chinese doctors had been infected, six of whom were said to have died.

The Beijing Friendship Hospital, which sent the 24th Chinese medical team to Guinea on Saturday for a two-year aid mission, denied the rumor, saying it was a misunderstanding.

It's the local doctors at the hospital who are infected with Ebola, not the Chinese doctors, said Kong Qingyu, the head of the 23th Chinese medical team, who has worked for two years in Guinea's China-Guinea Friendship Hospital.

However, the team faced the risk of death several months ago, when the public didn't know anything about the Ebola outbreak, Kong said.

Cao Guang, a member of Kong's team and a doctor from Beijing's Anzhen Hospital, received a patient in March who was suffering from fever and nausea, and died four days later.

The patient was soon diagnosed with Ebola and became the first case in the capital of Guinea. Cao and another Chinese doctor were quarantined and did not become infected.

All the doctors on the two teams are in good condition, Kong said.
