(ECNS) -- Seventy percent of government-owned cars in Beijing will be banned during the Third Senior Officials' Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to be held from Aug 6 to 21, according to the Beijing News.

The move is an attempt to ensure good air quality and ease traffic flow during the period.

Reporters learned that 60 percent of all government cars will be banned from roads completely, while the rest must adhere to five-day number plate restrictions.

One government official said he and his colleagues had also received messages calling for decreased use of private cars.

Another city official said that no matter how it gets done, the two-week long restrictions will be upheld according to the law.

The informal APEC summit is to be held in November in Beijing.
