(ECNS) – Six villagers have been arrested in Sanmenxia, Henan province, for intending to traffic a baby Bengal tiger they had bought online, according to Henan police on Thursday.

Police said the baby tiger was in good condition when they rescued it early Wednesday morning, and that it had been sent to the Sanmenxia Forest Public Security Bureau for protection.

The villagers confessed to buying the tiger on the Internet with 250,000 yuan ($40,250) and planned to profit from reselling it.

Further investigation is still underway.

Tigers are under national protection in China, where laws prohibit hunting, killing, selling or buying the animals.

The Bengal tiger is a subspecies that mainly lives in India and Bangladesh.
