Sale of antibacterial soap may take a hit with new FDA rule

(ECNS) – An FDA rule could remove antibacterial soaps and body washes from store shelves.

Earlier this month, the US Food and Drug Administration warned consumers that antibacterial products contain chemicals, such as triclosan and triclocarban, which may mess with people's hormones.

The rule, if approved, will take effect in September 2016. Experts say antibacterial products on the American market will take a hit, and they predict European countries to follow suit.

The Chinese market is usually slow in adapting to such regulations. However, the sale of antibacterial cleansing products is likely to suffer as Chinese consumers have negative impressions about them.

Right now, international brands such as Safeguard and Dettol have a big share of the Chinese market. Safeguard, under P&G, a brand that came to China over 20 years ago, has long made killing bacteria its selling point.

Safeguard told Beijing Business Today that it shares the view of the American Cleaning Institute, which, along with the Personal Care Products Council, object to the rule, saying that antibacterial products are "critical to public health" in preventing the spread of disease and maintaining personal hygiene.
