(ECNS) – Beijing subway has deployed 12 police dogs specializing in detecting gasoline, which is banned on public transportation, to make regular checks at its stations, Beijing Times reported.

Another eight gasoline detection dogs are expected to join them during the 2014 APEC summit, which will be held in October in Beijing.

Chen Baoyun, chief of the detection detachment of Beijing Traffic Police, said the well-trained dogs can detect gasoline sources in crowds, but won't attack people or bark.

With the dogs' help, security checks at subway stations can be quicker, Chen added.

Beijing has enhanced security measures in public places, including subway stations and bus stations, since May.

Currently, Beijing has about 650 dogs to assist the police, with 80 making regular checks downtown.

Beijing first put police dogs on patrol in 2008, when the Olympics were held in the city.
