Chengdu (ECNS) – Several hospitals in Chinese cities have set up special clinics for football fans who have got ill after staying up all night to watch the World Cup.

However, these "World Cup Syndrome" clinics have not received as many patients as expected, according to the Third People's Hospital of Chengdu, which launched such a clinic four years ago when the World Cup was held in South Africa.

The clinic has been reopened along with the World Cup this year, with four doctors and four nurses taking turns on duty all day long, said Wei Ming, chief of the hospital's emergency department.

Several people have reportedly died after staying up to watch the World Cup on television. Wei said these fans' sudden deaths were possibly because of heart attacks or hypertension induced by extreme excitement, too much alcohol, and fatty food.
