First China-made light rail trains to run in Philippines

(ECNS) – China will export light rail trains to the Philippines for the first time.

The Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works under China CNR Co., Ltd. announced the deal on Monday. The company will provide trains for Manila's subway line 3 for 540 million yuan ($87 m).

Manila is the Philippines's largest seaport and tourist city. It has three commuter rail lines, with most of the trains imported from Europe, Japan and South Korea.

To manufacture trains for the tropical city can be a challenging task. Trains have to adjust to Manila's hot and humid weather, and be able to undergo typhoons and storm rains.

The China-made trains would feature stainless steel, a powerful air conditioning system, electronic doors and automatic car couplers for comfortable and reliable rides.

The trains, each composed of four cars, would be 31 meters (about 102 ft) in length, 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) in height and 3.65 meters (12 ft) in width, with a top speed of 65 kilometers per hour.

With the addition of new trains, the arrival frequency of Manila's line 3 would be reduced to every two and half minutes.
