Hubei bans GM grains, oil for its garrison

(ECNS) -- The food bureau in Xiangyang of Hubei province has banned delivering genetically modified (GM) grains or cooking oil to military posts in the city since May 6, said an online report on People's Daily on Thursday.

Considering the uncertainty over impacts from GM foods, those who supply grains to the army in Xiangyang city should purchase non-GM grains and cooking oil, said a notice by the bureau on its website, with the aim of ensuring the health of military officers.

Chen Fan, head of the bureau, said delivering grain for the military is not a trivial matter and asked quality supervision staffers to fulfill their duty.

Severe punishment will be given to those who provide GM grains or grains that don't meet standards to the army, Chen added.

GM crop trials found in 10 provinces

Field trials of GM crops were found in 10 provinces in China, according to the Legal Weekly.
