Alaska skies clouded with Chinese pollution, US says

(ECNS) -- A news website in Alaska in the United States has attributed haze lingering above its largest city to Chinese pollutants, haiwainet.cn reported.

The Alaska Dispatch said the haze covering Anchorage on Saturday is from China, citing the National Weather Service.

The federal agency reported on its Facebook page, "Meteorologists and researchers have the ability to 'rewind' the path to see where [the pollution] starts."

It said pollutants from Chinese factory chimneys climb into the upper atmosphere, spin around over the north Pacific Ocean, and finally drop down over Anchorage and the Cook Inlet region.

The "'launch' was well over 5,000 miles away and from 14 days ago," it added.

It was not the first time US media claimed that pollution from China was having an effect in the US. CNN said in January that because of the US outsourcing manufacturing to China, the eastern US saw a decrease in sulfate pollution, but an increase was seen in the western part of the nation.
