(ECNS) – A 33-year-old engineer, who had worked for a whole month with no days off and 190 hours of overtime, was found dead in his rental home in Dongguan, Guangdong province, on April 9, Guangzhou Daily reported. He had been dead for three days.

Local police have ruled out murder, and confirmed it was a sudden death.

Relatives suspected overwork caused his death.

The engineer's wife, surnamed Xia, who didn't live with her husband, said her husband, Liu, had considered quitting his demanding job at Derchun Industries Co., Ltd., but didn't make it.

Liu's attendance records show he worked at least 12 hours every day, from 8 am to 9:30 pm, and took no days off in March, Xia added.

Wang, a director at the company's administration department, said Liu did work overtime, but that Liu volunteered for it, and he had filed applications for each overtime opportunity.

Wang said Liu's cause of death was still unclear, as a postmortem hasn't been done yet.

If Liu's death is determined to be connected to the company, they will compensate the family according to regulations, Wang added.
