China, Nepal launch research center for Himalayan studies

Katmandu (CNS) -- Scientists from China and Nepal launched a center for Himalayan studies in Katmandu on Monday.

The research center has been jointly set up by the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Nepal's Tribhuvan University.

The center's launching ceremony was attended by Bai Chunli, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Research will focus on the climate, geology and environmental conditions of the Himalayas. The center will also serve as a talent incubator to promote exchanges between the two countries.

Bai told reporters from China News Service (CNS) that China is home to a full-fledged research mechanism while the Nepalese side boasts large amounts of data about the Himalayas.

Crowned as the "earth's third pole," the mountain range is one of the most sensitive regions to climate change in the world.
