(ECNS) -- A teacher at a kindergarten in Shiyan, Hubei province, has stirred controversy by poking a student's hand with a needle and claiming it was a teaching method, the 10yan.com observed on Thursday.

Zhang, the mother of the two-year-old boy named Lele, said her son had become emotionally unstable after attending the kindergarten for only two days.

Zhang said the boy defecated in his pants after class and began having sleep problems, waking up several times during the night.

"When I asked my son what happened to him at the kindergarten, he clenched his hand into a fist and started crying."

Lele told Zhang that a teacher had stabbed him in his palm with a needle. Zhang then reported the case to the heads of the kindergarten and demanded an explanation.

Zhang was told that the teacher is a 24-year-old woman surnamed Wang with five years of experience in preschool education, and that she had poked the boy's hand to teach him the sensory experience of pain.

Wang called her method "experiential teaching," arguing that after understanding pain, kids would protect themselves from dangerous situations.

An official at the kindergarten admitted that Wang's method of teaching was inappropriate, and agreed to refund the 2,900 yuan ($467) tuition to the family after the boy withdrew from the kindergarten.

An extra 2,900 yuan was also given to Lele and his family as "mental damage compensation."

An official at the kindergarten said they were discussing how to punish the teacher.
