Dozens of dead pigs dumped in Beijing suburb

(ECNS) -- A number of dead pigs from an unknown source have been found in a village in suburban Beijing, the Beijing Morning Post said on Friday.

Nearly 20 dead pigs and piglets were found on a ramp near a bridge in Zhongqiao village, located in Yukou town, Pinggu district. Another eight carcasses were found in a pit in the village.

A resident surnamed Zhang told reporters that the pigs had been there for more than 10 days, causing health concerns among local residents.

"Villagers fear they might get diseases from the dead pigs," said Zhang.

"The pigs were probably dumped by farmers from other villages," said Chen, vice secretary of the Zhongqiao Village Committee.

According to regulations, animals that die of disease must be disposed of in a sanitary way, such as cremation or burial at least 1.5 meters deep.

"Some farmers just throw away dead pigs because it's the most convenient way to dispose of them," according to a pig farmer in the village.

Workers at the agricultural department of Pinggu district arrived at Zhongqiao village on Thursday afternoon to dispose of the carcasses.
