Malaysia Airlines plunges 12%, China airline stocks open lower

(ECNS) -- Shares of the Malaysian Airline System (MAS) plunged 12 percent in early trading on Monday morning after a Boeing 777 operated by the airline went missing over the weekend, according to Chinese media reports. [Special coverage]

The plane's disappearance also cast a shadow over Chinese stocks, as shares of China Southern Airlines, Air China, China Eastern Airlines and Hainan Airlines all dropped on Monday morning. Shares related to airport operations, online tourism and plane manufacturing all opened lower.

A Malaysian passenger plane carrying 239 people, including 154 Chinese passengers and 12 crew members, lost contact with air traffic control after leaving Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur early Saturday. It has not yet been located.
