Student invents spraying system to help control smog

(ECNS) -- A college graduate in Wuhan, Hubei province, has invented a smog dispersion device that uses water to reduce floating dust at construction sites, Cnhubei.com said on Thursday.

The young man named Li Heng came up with the idea when he was still a junior in college. It took him one year to develop the device, which has been given a national patent.

With sprayers installed on tower cranes, the device releases a mist of water above construction sites that can reduce dust and absorb dirt particles and impurities in the air.

To examine the efficiency of the device, a test was carried out by the School of Resource and Environmental Engineering at Wuhan University of Science and Technology and a local laboratory.

Results of the test show that spraying water mist from high above a construction site can reduce the density of particulate matter in air by 84 percent when there is a light breeze blowing.

The device has been applied to 15 construction sites in Wuhan.

Industrial emissions, automobile exhaust and floating dust are three major factors that contribute to smoggy weather in Wuhan. There are about 11,000 construction sites which are major sources of dust in the city.
